We welcome green burials at Highland & Independence Cemeteries, and we are in the process of opening a specific lot that will only allow green burials at Highland Cemetery.
What is a Green Burial?
In general, a green burial is the laying to rest of a loved one without a vault, a traditional casket, or embalming chemicals. It is a natural means of allowing remains to return to the earth.
What does the Cemetery require?
Our only requirements are that the remains be covered or shrouded, and if a decomposable casket is not used (such as a wicker casket), the body must lie on a board in order to be transported and placed on the lowering device. Funeral homes may have other requirements…you would need to discuss chemical embalming, types of caskets, and other considerations with your Funeral Director.
